Roundtable Discussion: “The Monster of the Week Is Patriarchy”
Join us while we discuss the episode “the Monster of the Week is Patriarchy” with the following format, BITE: B(ad) I(nteresting) T(oo much) E(verything else)
BAD
Roz: The odd-looking skull hidden behind the painting of that woman in the woods can’t be good when it sends Manifred half way across a room. I know Kai is something big and probably bad, but what exactly is he when he can remove vampire-energy. It’s not bad in the way that I can’t believe it, it’s bad for the ramifications of the whole series.
Leah: What were those guys thinking messing with Olivia. Bad move. I’m with Roz on the Kai thing. We just know he can’t be good, even if he thinks he is doing good.
Lisa: The only thing bad I can think of in this episode was the decision those two guys made to mess with Olivia in the bar. That was a very bad decision because she is not the one to be messed with!
INTERESTING
Roz: Lem’s need to protect Olivia is so different from all other sort of vampire relationships I imagine he’s had. That it’s his new compulsion is going to set up something different and awkward. It’s already done that and we haven’t seen Olivia in truly deadly situations.
Leah: Lem knows who he married, right? She doesn’t need constant protecting. Sure, it does come in handy when say she is about to be buried in the desert, but….it’s not always necessary.
Lisa: I found it very interesting that Patience is totally into Manfred. She was flirting up a storm in this episode! I wonder if that will go anywhere.
TOO MUCH
Roz: Why did we need a stripper vampire? We already do enough to demean women who choose to work there.
Leah: Count me in on this stripper part. Why? Not necessary as all.
Lisa: The stripper aspect of it all. You’ve seen one vampire stripper, you’ve seen them all.
EVERYTHING ELSE
Roz: What is going on with Joe and that guy who called the bar? I feel like we are setting up some big big issues for the season, but without much of why they matter.
Lisa: Once again I have to give a huge shout out to Francois Arnaud for another phenomenal performance. That scene when he embodied two ghosts at the same time could have been really cheesy if he wasn’t such a good actor. I totally believed him. So Good! Ok, let’s get to the real issue. What the hell is Kai and how can he turn a vampire back to a human? Can he do it with all supernatural beings or just vampires?
