Midnight, Texas news from Comic Con: New residents! Love and marriage! Demon cancer!
Midnight, Texas returned to San Diego Comic Con today with lots of news about season 2. We were in the press room getting the scoop, but until those videos are ready, here’s what we learned.
New Residents
NBC announced the arrival of three new residents in Midnight this season:
Nestor Carbonell (“Bates Motel,” “Lost”), Jaime Ray Newman (“The Punisher,” “Bates Motel”) and Josh Kelly (“UnREAL”) will add new layers of intrigue and suspense to the one-stoplight town of Midnight, Texas, which begins its second season at 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26 on NBC.
Carbonell and Newman will recur as Kai and Patience Lucero, respectively, the owners of Midnight’s new hotel. Their sudden arrival in town causes a stir and has the Midnighters suspicious about what is really going on. Kelly will recur as Walker Chisum, an openly gay demon hunter who has an intense connection with resident angel Joe Strong (Jason Lewis).
Kai (Nestor Carbonell) is a magnetic, holistic energy healer and Patience (Jaime Ray Newman) is his savvy and beautiful wife. Drawn to Midnight’s unique energy, they have opened Crystal Desert, a hotel and New Age healing center. Though Kai impresses the Midnighters with his power, some are skeptical of his motives and wonders if he is actually a con man. Patience uses her charm to ingratiate herself to Midnight and takes an immediate liking to Manfred (François Arnaud).
Walker (Josh Kelly) is a handsome, openly gay demon hunter, much like Joe Strong, the famed angel he admires. When Walker discovers Joe in Midnight, the two develop a bond fighting demons. Driven by revenge and an undeniably intense attraction to one another, Walker will get Joe into more trouble than either expects.
Love & Marriage
“We wanted this season to be sexier, racier, more salacious,” season 2 showrunner Eric Charmelo told us in the press room. And it sounds like they plan to deliver! Bobo and Fiji are all blissed out when we return to Midnight. Post-near-apocalypse they are “very much in love and spending all their time together,” Dylan Bruce told us. “I’m glad the producers told me how much time we’d be spending in bed a few months ahead of time so I could go on a diet.” However, something about their being together is causing someone – or something – to try to kill Bobo. “It’s like Final Destination, but he’s totally oblivious!”
Meanwhile, Olivia and Lemuel are adjusting to married life. Lem has moved into Olivia’s place and that “requires some creative solutions” to make sure he has a safe place to sleep. “It’s an adjustment,” Arielle Kebbel said. “You’re learning how to share your space with someone and navigate around his particular needs.”
For Joe and Chuy, the arrival of Walker has the potential “to cause some conflict,” said Jason Lewis. Not only is Walker a demon hunter – kind of a problem for Chuy – but he finds “a commonality” with Joe that leads to a deeper connection as Joe struggles to figure out how he fits into the world now that he’s “no longer hiding.”
Demon Cancer
When we see Manfred again, “he’s in a dark place,” said Francois Arnaud. In the season premiere, Manfred has a nightmare that involves him hurting the people around him. “It’s a residue from being possessed at the end of last season,” Francois said. “It’s demon cancer.” Terrified that it’s a vision of the future, he resists sharing this with anyone for fear that it will lead to the nightmare coming true. Perhaps a silver lining here is that Xylda, Manfred’s dead grandmother, returns in spirit form. Will she help Manfred through this dark time?
We have more scoop from the press room to share, so stay tuned! Meanwhile, follow us on Instagram and Twitter for updates.
