What we learned about Midnight, Texas season 2 at the TCA’s

By  |

Networks haven presenting their Fall lineups to television critics for the last two weeks at the biannual Television Critics Association (TCA’s) event. Today it was NBC’s turn and they brought out new executive producers Eric Charmelo and Nicole Snyder from Midnight, Texas to talk up the new season. Here’s what we learned.

Limited Episodes

Charmelo confirmed the episode count for this season: 9 episodes airing over eight weeks.

Bummer. If you’re a “spot the silver lining” person like I am, though, perhaps the limited episode count allows for higher quality and a better shot at a third season? NBC has been experimenting with limited run seasons (e.g. The Good Place at 13 episodes per season), so it’s possible they’re looking at Midnight, Texas to fill the Grimm-sized hole in their Fall schedule while still allowing for other series to run in the Spring.

It’s All About the Hotel

Because season 1 blew through the bulk of the content contained in the novels, season 2 will be almost all original stories that have been approved by series author Charlaine Harris. However, the hotel that figures into the plot of Day Shift, albeit a “crazier” version than in the books, will be a linchpin of this season’s overall arc. New series regular Nestor Carbonell is a self-professed “healer” who purchases the hotel and offers “cures” to the townspeople to make them “normal“.

According to the producers, Carbonell’s character poses the question: “if being born different was a choice would you choose to assimilate to avoid persecution or would you [not] because what makes you different is what makes you special?”

Mr. Snuggly Makes a Friend?

According to Hanh Nguyen from IndieWire, Mr. Snuggly is not only back in season 2 but he’s possibly making a new friend.

“FYI for the fans, I got the scoop. He’s back, talks to a dog, and … got a lion cut?? I mean, I hope that last isn’t true but we’ll have to wait and see.”

We will also find out that Mr. Snuggly used to be human!

Midnight, Texas returns Friday, October 26 on NBC.

I'm a looooong time fan of Charlaine Harris and her novels. In 2008, I launched the first and (what became) largest True Blood fansite at True-Blood.net. When I heard that Midnight, Texas was in development back in January 2016, I immediately started planning a new fansite and eagerly awaited the show's premiere. Welcome!
